The specific form that these needs will take will of course vary greatly from person to person. A person with strong ego needs, who acts on satisfying those needs regularly, just doesn't understand the person who's ego needs are fully satisfied and are totally engaged in a self-actualized project.

In light of these reflections and those of local bishops, we encourage Catholics throughout the United States to be active in the political process, particularly in these challenging times. Mystics usually believe in pantheism or outright idealism.

The change effort must be shaped by those of us who are most directly impacted by educational inequity. The third question faces anyone who makes any decisions at all, and even not deciding is itself a decision.

Conscience is not something that allows us to justify doing whatever we want, nor is it a mere "feeling" about what we should or should not do. Thus, our faith helps us understand that the pursuit of a civilization of love must address our own failures and the ways in which these failures distort the broader ordering of the society in which we live.

If we wish to see these needs directly and clearly we must turn to neurotic or near-neurotic individuals, and to the economic and social underdogs, or else to social chaos, revolution, or breakdown of authority. All the life issues are connected, for erosion of respect for the life of any individual or group in society necessarily diminishes respect for all life.

The family-based on marriage between a man and a woman-is the first and fundamental unit of society and is a sanctuary for the creation and nurturing of children. In making these decisions, it is essential for Catholics to be guided by a well-formed conscience that recognizes that all issues do not carry the same moral weight and that the moral obligation to oppose policies promoting intrinsically evil acts has a special claim on our consciences and our actions.

What a man can be, he must be. Look closely at Erikson's fourth stage. Conscience always requires serious attempts to make sound moral judgments based on the truths of our faith. Truth is logical and parsimonious consistency with evidence and with other truth.

I have attempted to study this phenomenon on a clinical-personological basis with selected individuals, and have at least convinced myself that in some individuals there is a truly basic aesthetic need.
